Washingtonian Features

MENTOR: JEFF GLENDENNING

During my summer internship at Studio Glendenning, I redesigned three features for Washingtonian, a monthly magazine based out of the Washington, D.C. area.

City of Spies (July ‘23)

This is a feature dedicated to the spy culture of the nation's capital. The central visual theme is the merging of old and new espionage practices. By repurposing emojis, a playful and entertaining element of current pop culture, I want to allude to the existence of spies even today.

The illustrations and visual elements draw from popular aspects of espionage, such as redacted text and battered classified files, and a limited color palette hints at the mysterious nature of the profession.

Dining Deals (August ‘23)

This feature rounds up the best affordable restaurant meals in and around the city. The list is exhaustive and includes places from local joints to fine dining. The visuals, a vibrant mix of colors, typefaces, and shapes, draw from the aesthetics of food joint signs, menu cards, and hand-painted advertisements, creating an exciting reading experience.

Style Setters (September ‘23)

This is an annual feature showcasing D.C.'s most fashionable people. Going with the photo shoot's theme, the design is elegant with a hint of playful. The photographs take center stage, and the typography is supportive. Yet it's interesting enough to engage the reader. It is inspired by the camera flashes on a red carpet.
